The book promotes a hands-on approach to making holograms and an understanding of why and how they work. While several existing texts cover different aspects of the field of holography, none provides a complete, up-to-date, and accessible view of its popular, scientific, and engineering aspects. Hobbyist manuals such as Homemade Holography (Unterseher, Hansen and Schlesinger, Ross Books 1982) and survey works such as Practical Holography (Saxby, Prentice Hall London, 1994) are approachable but focus on the art and craft of holography at the expense of important and instructive foundation concepts. Mature engineering texts such as Optical Holography (Collier, Burckhardt, and Lin, Academic Press 1971) and Handbook of Optical Holography (Caulfield, Academic Press 1979) are strongly math-oriented and lie beyond the reach of many students, laypeople and even engineers from other disciplines.
